My occasional thoughts, comments, and life. Occasional said things become to much and I don't post, but I do remember every once in a while.

I've been hearing a lot of rumbling recently that the Nintendo Wii is beginning to lose some of its charm, and that the hardcore gamers are getting angry at the big N because its not putting out enough games on the Wii to make it appeal to them.

I'll agree that there aren't nearly enough 'core' games for the Wii itself. But I ask you, when was the last time you browsed the Virtual Console selection?

if you take Super Mario Galaxy out of my play history, I have spent more time on the Virtual console than any all my Wii games combined. As a matter of fact, the VC was a primary factor in why I even bought the Wii in the first place, and yet I don't hear a blessed thing about it except on dedicated VC sites (see link for an example).

Some of the VC games I have:

Super Mario World (IMO, Best mario game ever, though some will claim that SMB 3 holds that title.)

Starfox 64

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the 7 Stars (one of the finest JRPGs ever, if I do say so myself)

Ogre Battle: March of the Black Queen (Before a VC release this game would have cost you a pretty penny to track down, as only 250,000 carts were made in the US)

thats just a sample, but available also are several classic Zelda games, more JRPG's than you can shake a stick at, and some genuine overlooked gems (I would argue that the above Ogre Battle title is one such)

I bring this up because another grumbling that I hear a lot is that older games did it better. Like JRPG's, recently a lot of them have perhaps looked pretty, but fell on their face in the execution. But the  classics, especially the ones they both to release on the VC are pretty dang nice.

Anyway, I just felt like throwing that out there. (and I do own a PS3 for my 'core' current gen system, so this isn't a fanboy exclusive rant)

core gamers already own old titles 8/16/64 bits. they also own original gamecube titles getting remade on wii.

really wii's virtual console and wiiware can't even match with PSN and XBLA's titles either. look at Braid, SSF2 turbo HD, Flower, Wipeout, castle crashers, bionic commando rearmed, Soldner-X or super stardust hd...

wii still cost 250 euros here. more than a xbox 360. 'nuff said

Granted that a lot of the core have their old systems, but a lot don't either, like me . and having access to great games from all the 8/16/32 bit systems (sans Sony) in one box is hecka nice.

I guess mostly I just think its a shame that big game sites don't cover it more. I always try to find a review on a game before I buy it to make sure there aren't any super obnoxious bugs or crap like that, and on the VC I always have to go to a specialized site, which can be sort of annoying because their run by volunteers most of the time and it can take them a while to get to a new release.

Nonsense, Starfox 64 is superior to everything you just listed.

The Wii is still great for core gamers. The only problem it has is that people aren't willing to always develop for it versus the PC or X360/PS3 platforms. Even the PSP has a power rivalry with the Wii's hardware.

The question is whether or not you like innovative gameplay or graphics.

If you only care about gameplay, the Wii is for you, but if you want graphics, look elsewhere. Want both? Go PC. Or Mac, but you won't have a great selection.

Depends if you're looking for a mint box version or if you want to actually play Ogre Battle. A used SNES Ogre Battle cartridge costs usually around $35-120, with the average range I've noticed at roughly $70. Not a bad price for arguably the best and one of the rarest SNES games around.

I think the problem with the Wii is the lack of very good games, or at least the availability of said games. Very few stores carry Fire Emblem or Mario Galaxy in this area, while a large amount of games seem to be shovelware or just updated ports. Release higher-quality games, and things will be a bit better.

The wii is way over rated. Get ps3 or xbox 360.

how is re:releasing old games that sold well 10 years ago not abandoning the core audiances?  If thats the best they can give us?

That being said, I'm reserving my opinion of nintendo.  They did finaly and recently move the club over to US shores.  They brought over starfy as well.  Until I know what their many dev teams have been working upon (because seriously, what are they making these days?  There arn't even many casual games in the works right now) I can't say they've abandoned us.  Who knows, maybe at the end of the year the new 2D mario will be announced, along side Kid Icurus, the boy and his blob, metroid, kirby, and donkey kong.  (you know, their 'core' games)

But you are forgetting, the old games that sold 10 years ago still are loved by many core gamers.

what one considers "core" games is irrelevant as it's personal to each.

most of you are missing the point of the Wii, it was not developed to compete with other consoles in the manner of your so called "core" games, or who develops the next best graphically intensive game, or even who created the best story line/overall game.

the purpose of the Wii was to offer a different console that GOT KIDS OFF YOUR @SS when playing games and get your ENTIRE body involved to provide a more physically interactive console gaming environment. Rather than sitting on your LAZY @SS using nothing but your hands, namely your thumbs and a finger or two.

In that area the Wii STANDS ALONE!!!! the only thing that compares is the Rock Band/GH genre.

The problem is teenagers think they know it all, but in fact are to naive, ignorant and inexperienced to see the true picture, parents on the other hand love the system because it gets kids of the couch when playing and if played the way the console is intended actually provides a small amount of exercise which is better than most console babies get today. For this Nintendo deserves respect because the true bigger picture is they are sending a message to parents that they trying to combat the problem of the young couch potato generation that does nothing but sit and game.

When I was a kid all we had was Atari or Oddysey, we spent the majority of our time OUTSIDE riding bikes, playing baseball/football whatever, something that 75% of kids today have no idea about because your glued to the dam console game...sad, truely sad.

IRT Blackcurtain: You probably didn't mean to accuse me of being one of those lazy kids, but just FYI, I'm not. I didn't have a console till I was 13, and that was a SNES. I had to buy all my own games for it too, which meant mowing the lawn during the hot summer and saving my pennies during the winter to get any.

And while I welcome your comments, I would appreciate it if you would please refrain from the swearing on my blog. Thanks .

I have one, looking at getting the other.

And as far as quality games on the Wii, I think if Ubisoft had taken Red Steel seriously, things would be a whole lot different (they have as much admitted that they did Red Steel halfway because they didn't think the Wii was serious). I really hope The Conduit will reverse the trend Red Steel started. There is also some rumors that the Big N is gonna release something major around christmas (Gamestop, I think it was, said Nintendo told them to reserve lots of shelf space around the holidays).

A Donkey Kong for Wii would be amazing so long as they don't try to make the control scheme too 'unique.' Or at least give us multiple options.

I own every release of every final fantasy game and the requisit system to play them on.

I think that most tenager are awed by graphics of the PS3 and Xbox. When you are iolder and more experienced you look for gameplay a lot more than the shinny graphics.

I bought the wii because you will never have better games, Zelda, Metroid. on it and it appeals a lot more to my three kids than the PS3 and Xbox ever will.
